Chapter 4: Too Much, Too Public

Jul closed the bathroom mirror gently, her reflection folding into itself. It was just past 5 p.m. The room was quiet, her hair pinned back with precision, lips softly painted. She stood in front of her closet for five minutes before touching a single hanger.
She hadn’t spoken to Han all day.
She hadn’t stayed.
She hadn’t apologized either.
But she hadn’t blocked him, which counted for something in their world.
What she did do was show up for herself. For the work dinner, she had once dreaded and now welcomed like a life raft.
Her orange satin bustier hugged her in all the places confidence usually didn’t. The cream high-waisted pants made her feel composed. Clean. Intentional. The earrings she chose, delicate gold hoops, were a nod to the girl she used to be before things got complicated.
But nothing felt uncomplicated anymore. Not even choosing what shoes to wear.
Jul arrived at the venue alone.
