Chapter 5: Everyone Was Watching

Jul hadn’t meant to sit beside another man.
Not deliberately. Not spitefully. It was simply the seat offered. One chair away from the only exit, away from the gaze that had tracked her across the rooftop like heat without flame.
She adjusted the hem of her pants, then glanced at the man beside her. Tunji, was it? Something-something in fintech. Perfect teeth. Too many cologne layers. He laughed too quickly at his jokes, his hand lingering too long near hers on the tablecloth. And yet she stayed seated, wine glass balanced loosely in her hand.
Because Han was watching.
Because she wanted him to.
But she didn’t want to admit that.
Han stood across the banquet table under soft golden lights and the chatter of polished conversations. Unmoving. Unblinking. His wine glass hovered near his mouth, but he hadn’t sipped. His other hand was deep in his pocket, but his posture wasn’t relaxed. It was contained. Controlled.
Jul could read his mood like a page torn halfway open.
